009 OMG WT-FUDGE

July 2nd, 2006 by michelletam

england vs portugal.

brazil vs france.

haha, those fateful first of july matches - the teams i had been hoping would go head to head in a stellar match got eliminated yesterday :( yes, england lost and so did brazil. *sniffles*

so in my spate of boredom and disappointment, i’ve decided to write to both brazil and england via my blog. be warned, it’s more of a tongue lashing than anything else.

let me scold the one who won first.

dear france,

what_is_wrong_with_you? in 2002, when people were rooting for you guys to win, you lost to senegal in your first opening match, and losing as defending champions at that! people probably died of heart attacks and lost thousands of euros in bets or something like that. in short, you made people really, really upset. including me, cause i thought you played really well in 1998 and was shocked to see you in such horrid form!

and today morning, at 3 am, when people are actually NOT rooting for you to win to see the samba boys go on to the semi’s, you go ahead and actually WIN. once again, you probably caused heartache/heart attacks all around the globe. you also caused lots and lots and LOTS of fans to lose money in bets. (just so you know, the fans wanted a brazil-england/brazil-germany match, you nitwits!) what is wrong with you people? do you really want to be disliked that much? BAH!

congratulations, really - but why lose when i wanted you to win and win when i wanted brazil to win? meanies.

brickbats and fishballs,
michelle

p.s. i hate to admit it, but you guys played really well. hats off to zidane and henry!

now for the ones who lost. i can’t diss portugal - lisa and ian will kill me if i do, as well as cristiano ronaldo groupies.

dear brazil,

i’ve supported you all the way but you guys got lenient. WHY THE HELL WERE YOU PEOPLE SO FRICKING OVERCONFIDENT IN THE FIRST HALF? don’t you remember that ‘98 final where France whooped you and whooped you good?! YOU ONLY STARTED RUNNING ABOUT FOR YOUR LIVES IN THE LAST QUARTER BUT THAT WASN’T GOOD ENOUGH! bah. samba boys, i am so, so disappointed. you could have lifted the cup again, but you’re out. gone. *puts green and yellow face paint away sadly*

a disappointed fan,
michelle

p.s. ronaldinho, go and promote breeze washing powder summore lah (it’s true, i swear), THIS is what happens. do you know that ronaldo actually had more action in that match than you did? the unfit, out of form ronaldo actually TRIED, for crissakes. BAH.

p.s. kafu, you’re so cute. i think you ought to know that, even if you guys didn’t win.

dear england,

i knew things weren’t going to be pretty when owen’s out with an injury, rooney’s sent off the pitch for elbowing (or doing something remotely offensive) to cristiano ronaldo and beckham the captain is substituted during the game. i knew it. and yet i hoped.

thanks for starting off a dismal night with a dismal loss. i guess you guys got the ball rolling for the biggest upsets in the joga bonita yet.

and no, that pun was not intended.

love,
michelle

p.s. there’s also something called not relying solely on ’star players’, mates. keep that in mind.

aih. now who to support? both also out already. germany? italy? france? portugal? my heart is not in the beautiful game anymore. sigh! :(

(by the way, who plans to skip school after watching the upcoming finals? drop me a line! nyehehehe.)

008 st paul’s

July 1st, 2006 by michelletam

it’s been a month and a half since i joined st paul’s as a lower-sixer, and boy has it been a heck of a ride so far.

i won’t lie to you - i didn’t like it at first. i was miserable. appalled. irritated. i wondered what i was doing there and why i didn’t go to college instead. compared the old buildings to the new, gleaming facilities of puteri. had my nerves on an end due to the constant noise and hustle and bustle.

but like i said, it’s been a month and a half now, and to quote justin timberlake/mcdonald’s/whatever - i’m lovin’ it.

things are great here. i don’t miss puteri anymore.

sure, the buildings are old, but they’re steeped in history. sure, the boys are loud, but that doesn’t mean they won’t make way for you and treat you with respect.

i love everything about this school. things are cooler, better, different. teachers actually smile and say good morning when you greet them. you can (gasp!) bring your own books and pencilbox into the library.

i even love the apple green uniform i wear. i love it so much that it’s even part of the reason i didn’t apply to be a prefect. i get to wear the apple green ensemble as a librarian, you see - so that’s what i am now. :D
(i’m not alone, apparently - even the head boy of bkt mewah and the head girl of stan didn’t apply!)

my class teacher is really cool and is more like a friend than a tutor, really. she makes us write essays_every_day but i don’t mind. i also happen to have some uber awesome puterians, paulians and mewah-ians as classmates.

what else? hmm. well, everyone’s or almost everyone’s brother is in st paul’s as well. ian’s there, fezan’s there, and it’s nice to see my besties’ brothers in school. a lot of the great seniors i knew are in upper six as well and that’s handy. basically, there’s just nothing to not love, except of course, the run down state of certain amenities - but it’s not that bad, really.

also, one of the things i’ve dreamt of finally happened - being chief editor of the paulian yearbook! i’ve got a stellar committee, and with it being the most widely read publication in certain seremban schools (coughcoughputericoughcough), i’m excited! :D

i’d write about my orientation (which was wicked) but right now i’d like to tell you all a little juicy piece of info - we might be having a prom soon. yes dahlings, the sixth form league (of which i’m secretary) has recently acquired permission and god willing, we’ll have it later this year. i’m not too sure on the finer details (as to whether non paulians are allowed or not) but i’ll get back to you all soon. in the meantime, it’s never too late to get that slinky lbd and a hot date, ladies! ;)

later!

007 blog tweaks

April 29th, 2006 by michelletam

phew.

i went through all my old posts, tweaked the font settings, double spaced each paragraph and basically made everything nicer and neater. see! the blog is so much easier on the eyes now! so much easier to read…so much easier to *coughs* comment. heh.

i love hearing feedback from you guys after a long post, so don’t hesitate to drop a comment/a line anytime, kie? i know i don’t always reply them, but i read each and every one. ;)

back to more blogging!

006 shopping trips and random encounters

April 29th, 2006 by michelletam

(again - when i DO blog, the posts tend to be really long.)

d
ear blog,

i went shopping yesterday. here’s what i did.  i called ruby up. she had to jaga the house as her parents were in kedah. oh well. i called lisa up. she was sick with the flu. i called jessie, and a lady’s voice told me my simcard can’t make international calls. oh yeah, she’s in perth. =(

seeing to the fact i only really hang out with these people (and pu, budden pu only comes when ruby comes along too) i didn’t bother to ring anyone else up. why bother spending a whole day with anyone less than your besties, eh? so i decided to spend it with myself - and my little brother. not so little anymore, he’s actually a strapping young boy/teenager/man/whatever transitional stage being 14 is. and strong enough to piggyback me around the house too - whee!

first, dad dropped me and edmen off at parkson because i wanted to pick up some paper clips from memory lane. perhaps you’ve seen them? they’re wooden, large clips with a big pink felt heart. i got two of them for my birthday and a soft toy from lisa, and i’ve been using them for my tuition notes ever since. i thought i could grab ten more (each one being only rm 0.80) but when i got there, only ONE was left! :(

so disappointing. i bought it without delay and hopefully the other memory lanes in KL will have more. i queried the sales girl about stock availability, but she didn’t say much and seemed more interested in going back to the KOSMO! tabloid papers she was reading.  when i dropped in later, she was gossiping with a friend who had dropped in and was oblivious to the customers in the store. i could have walked out with one of the gigantic teddy bears on display and she probably wouldn’t have noticed.  praise the lord for the truly unique customer service experiences here, sometimes.

wandered around parkson for a while more while dad picked up his new glasses. he came to pick us up around half an hour later and off we went to jusco.

at jusco, we started out with lunch at Kenny Rogers. had their new ‘lamb chop set’ thing - and surprisingly, it wasn’t too bad! the cut of meat was tender - and the sauce very flavourful! you can actually taste the herbs and the different nuances on your tongue. the set comes with two side dishes that you can choose (one is preset, which is spicy potato wedges with a cheesy dip - i was kind of surprised, it was more KFC-esque than Kenny Rogers) and a muffin! yay. i love KR muffins. gave dad quite a bit of my lamb though - i tend to eat the side dishes first and that makes me full before starting on the main course. heh.

anyhow, after lunch, i set on a shopping trip! there’s not much to see in jusco, but the popular and mph isn’t too bad. not as well stocked as the ones in kl but hey - you can’t have them all. i headed for popular first, to see if the book i wanted (a moment in peking by lin yutang) was still there. it’s recommended by pearl s.buck, plus yutang got a nobel prize nomination for this book! was glad that it was - i guess no one was interested in it. too bad for them, good for me! mwahahahaha.

i saw annabel there, an ex senior of smk puteri. i see her there everytime i go actually, and we always have a chit-chat, mostly about books.  she has been an absolute dear - i visit popular at least once every two weekends, and always leave with a book or two =) we talked about her educational plans - she’s leaving for Oz/India in a month and she asked me about mine. i left the bookstore after a while, not wanting to spend rm 74.90 just yet.

i went to mph next, and saw a softcover version of the illustrated ‘the da vinci’s code’. mum has been quite curious about the paintings and structures mentioned in the novel, so i’m thinking of getting that for her. mph didn’t have much to offer, though the neil gaiman books were more than tempting. also, i took a few minutes to skim through ‘the devil wears prada’ after hearing much about it. let’s just say it’s not really my cup of tea. i won’t mind reading it if someone else lent it to me, but it’s not really worth my book money.

after that, i went to this clothing store named orange sorbet. it’s a very…girly store, full of candy pop colours and sorbet-pastel shades. as i’ve lost quite a bit of weight in NS, i thought, hey, let’s look around for fun. and yipee, i found so many pretty skirts! one was a turquoise green and another was a peachy orange bloom. another was lace white with pink trimmings. and they all fitted so nicely. they were all in the price range of rm 49-rm 59. i wanted to get them, but the book was to be my ’splurge’ of the month.  after much thinking, the book won the mental tussle.

i left orange sorbet and hopefully, the skirts will still be there next month. and not wanting to take any more chances with temptation, i went straight back to popular to buy my tome of a book. i’d have to lug it around all day, but oh well. annabel asked me to buy a booklet on the upcoming bookfest at klcc - it’s rm 2, and is the ‘ticket’ to the bookfest, which will be held from the 27th of may to the 4th of june at klcc. apparently there’ll be tonnes of deals and discounts on stuff there, so i’ll have to check it out.

annabel is a godsend lah, really. she also alerts me to the latest books and stock in popular, which is handy :). like when she was wrapping up omnibuses of john grisham’s works for sale, she recommended them. pretty cheap, under rm 20 for two of his works, which at normal price, are rm70++! too bad i’m not a fan, but it was sweet of her nevertheless.

after that, i went to cocobeach as i heard they were having a special three days clearance sale. i got an rm 75.90 handbag/tote at 50% off, whee! loads of other nice stuff as well, but i was overspending ady. got a new lip gloss, a few black blue g-2 pens (for my moleskine) and a few mags that i usually buy. looked at new phone models as i have to decide on which one i want. it’s pretty tough - between the n70 and the walkman phone series from sony ericsson. decisions decisions.

after a heck of a lot of walking about and window shopping, i got a mocha frappucino and rested at starbucks for a while. my brother can’t understand why people spend their money at starbucks for overpriced coffee and i can’t either, but i do it anyway. he spent most of the day at the bowling alley with my dad - and their last game ended with his score being 84 and dad’s being 139.

considered going for a manicure at the ‘nail trend bar’ but my better sense ruled that it’s a fricking waste of money when i can do a decent french manicure on my own. plus school’s starting soon (form six) so what’s the point? and jess, stop chanting that ‘break some rules for once in your life’ thing you’ve been giving me for the past few years. :P

also, i saw one of my national service trainers! cikgu dila and her fiancee. i was going up the escalator when i heard someone yell ‘michelle!’. looking down, i saw her beaming up at me, and i waved back before going back down. we had a short chat about things and she introduced me to her man before we talked about, what else, education plans. parted ways after a while as her turn at the atm machine finally came.

i also met my mui mui, jasmine, at popular. her prefect camp had just ended, and it was held at inti college this year. heard some interesting things about certain reorganizations in the power shuffle of the prefect board. oh well, all the best of luck to them - though the colour scheme of the new prefect shirt is baffling. imho, the one that shhobaa created was cooler, snazzier. black and red works anytime, bay-bey. not, god forbid, pink and yellow. it was cute lah, but - PINK AND YELLOW?!

met her parents as well, uncle and auntie kok. they’re going to singapore tomorrow to visit zachary. that fella misplaced his whole pencil box. i emphatise - i know how sucky that is. we too, parted ways after about half an hour. oh, and congrats to all the new prefects and the new prefect board of smk puteri - and good luck (you’ll need it)!

dinner was horrible. in an attempt to not patronise the restaurants, we decided to eat at arena. we made this mistake once, but being charitable, we thought of giving it another go.

DO NOT, and i mean, do NOT, eat at arena unless there’s a guarantee you’ll get back the time wasted spent eating/a compensation or something. the food is bad! like seriously, penang fried kuay teow there is more like maggi mee in black sauce? like WET? hello, penang fried kuay teow is NOT wet. bah. and the roti canai was super oily and soggy. the dhal was hopeless - even the dhal in my camp was better, and that’s like, whoa, cruel, isn’t it? also, please do not charge rm1.50 for a cup full of ice, a few drops of juice and little else. thank you.

bah, bleargh, yuck. sigh.

i also saw amy, yoke poh, yee quan, kei ching, darren, je, wc and the rest of their gang at jusco. had a short chat with a few of them before we headed our respective ways. turns out they were going to watch a movie, as was my brother and i.

we decided to go with ’she’s the man’. there were no better shows playing. i can’t really stand animated animals (’the wild’ - madagascar 2, anyone?), i don’t waste money on horror (’water spirit’ - dark water-ish?), am not a fan of either sarah jessica parker or matthew (’failure to launch’ - it’ll come to astro someday) and i’ve seen milla jovovich in enough butt kicking movies (’ultraviolet’ was deemed ‘ultra boring’ by the star anyhow). so yeah, safest bet? chick flick. heh.

surprisingly, i enjoyed it. it was a good laugh and more funny than i expected. lots of eye candy, too. my brother and i were howling with laughter mostly throughout, and the audience were chuckling and guffawing appreciatively too. good fun lah - i mean, you know how it ends, but the journey towards the end isn’t any less fun for it. i wasn’t bored for a single moment - i guess it was slick and well paced. also, amanda brynes looks better in drag. ’nuff said. and the football coach has a delish brit accent - he manages to make shouting sound sexy. heh. we left the cinema pretty satisfied at about 11.20 pm. also, i met sasha from methodist high - she was sitting right next to me!

overall, it was a pretty nice day. met a lot of people that i didn’t expect to meet, and in a way, didn’t have time to get or feel lonely because at almost every turn or every other shop, there was a familliar face ready with a smile and eager to chat. people ranging from future school mates, ns teachers, mui mui’s, friends from other schools, ex seniors and other assorted characters.

sometimes it’s nice to live in such a small town as seremban - people know each other better, and remember each other for longer (for good or bad reasons, either way). for better or for worse, a toast to small communities, townships and most importantly, friendships that last beyond the thresholds of schools!

005 how do i know things? simple.

April 26th, 2006 by michelletam

before this extremely long entry, a big shoutout to my girl, JESSICA TEE SIANG YEE/Jessie - you’re 18 today bay-beh! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! SEE! I’m cluttering my post with supah-large fonts just for you! happy 18 years young gorgeous, hope you’re living it up in perth! ;)

on with the entry!

i was having a chat with my bestie, lisa, over the phone on her recent quiksilver surf/skate festival on the 22nd of april, and we were also discussing several other things. girls multitask at everything. that’s why we never get off the phone - too many subjects crammed in.

anyhow, she mentioned shisha, and here’s how it went.

lisa : we went to this shisha place.
me : it’s not tobacco, right?
lisa : oh no, it’s got more of a…hmm…
me : a fruity taste.
lisa : yeah, it does - hey, HOW DO YOU KNOW? it’s not like you’ve tried it before, right?
me : i, uh, read.
lisa : right.

and then we proceeded to talk about green bikini tops and surf pools and how click five isn’t all that great (duh) and felt heart paper clips before broaching the subject of clothing.

lisa : you know, there’s this clothing store in australia called supre…
me : supre! they have gorgeous debim skirts! all frayed and ripped and stuff!
lisa : yeah, they’re gorgeous - hey, HOW DO YOU KNOW?  you’ve never been to australia!
me : i, uh, read.
lisa : what do you mean?
me : online communities post pictures of what they buy, and so i get to read about the brands and see the products.
lisa : goodness. how do you know these things, seriously?
me : i don’t get to go out and do things much - but i make up for it by reading about it.

which is true. even if you can’t drive (like me), am not sure about the bus schedule (like me), don’t even bloody trust the public transport ’system’ here (like me) or don’t have the time or money to travel right now (like me), you can always read. read and read and read. that’s how you know things.

i read extensively. i know that experience is the best thing, but hey, reading’s the next best thing when you don’t have access to the experience, right? a teacher once said (actually, quite a few teachers) that i was a very well read person. that is one compliment that i can’t turn down because, well, it’s so bloody true!

the breed of people who really, truly read is fast dying out. i know that there are some people (in my social circle as well as in the general group of people i hang out with) who really do delve into books - but how many are out there?  i hate to think that malaysians on average read only about 2 books or 2 pages a year or something like that. that must mean that the person like me who reads about 12-17 books a month (if i’m damn rajin, 20) has her amount of books divided by the rest of the population; giving the rest of the world the impression that the only time malaysians pick up a book is when they have to study for the undang’s test (for driving) and when they read their religious texts (the bible, the quran, and all those other holy books).

seriously, to those who don’t read or don’t really read - start doing so. it’s not that hard. in an average day, i read my thesaurus, the star newspaper, whatever educational stuff i need to read to get my tuition work done, several blogs, and at least one book. of course, there are magazines that i buy such as Klue (a magazine for kl-ites, but quite useful as they have performing arts schedules and current events in the hub of the city), Cleo, Female, Reader’s Digest, Times magazine (if i’m lucky), old editions of national geographic and even really, really old Reader’s Digest. i love RD mags from the 1980’s and backwards. I have issues dating back to the 1960’s thanks to my auntie. they’re really much better than the current editions.

‘a waste of time’? how is reading a waste of time? when you read, you gain knowledge. or when you read as much fiction as i do, you gain a hell of a vocabulary/understanding of word play ;)

see - knowledge is priceless. time is gold. when you spend time to get knowledge, isn’t it a fair trade? win win situation what. gold for priceless things wor! untung lah! at least you won’t be floundering like a dying fish in front of your college professors, uni lecturers or jpa interviewers or whatever.

the reason why i’m posting this is because of the dismal english in this country, actually. i remember in my bio tuition a week or two ago, the tuition sir used this phrase ’science stuff etc etc will give rise to this state etc etc’. i was taking notes, and i wrote what he said without question as i understood it. the puterian girls understood it too, methinks. however, more than half the class, or i dare say three quarters of the class were like, wtf? give rise? a few of them asked me how to spell it, and i spelled it out for them. still, i guess they weren’t really sure perhaps, because they asked the sir again, and he explained it out.

the state of english is worsening day by day, and there’s a big hullabaloo all the time in the newspapers. don’t the rakyat realize all they need is to bloody READ and, if the book they choose has some tough words, a good dictionary? just read, read, READ.

geez. the government should employ me to be their spokesperson for reading or something. they can pay me by allowing me to pick a book of MY CHOICE from mph/kinokuniya/popular/leading bookstores EVERYDAY for free! wahlau - 7 free books a week, talk about job perks! and since they overprice electronics here, they can throw in a 5th generation iPod into the deal. sweet.

and nilam programmes DO NOT HELP, because all you have to do is to go to the library, take out 20 books, copy down their synopsis and make up some bullshit about what you learned from the book. those who do it sincerely benefit from it - but how many do? sigh. much better to have book discussions/book reports like the ones they have in the US. that one you seriously cannot bull your way through, unless you get Cliff’s notes (a point form of novels). but even then, you still have to read the cliff’s notes to bluff your way through, right? sigh.

anyhow, i’ll end this now - but i’m in a ‘blog it’ mood nowadays, so yeah - more blog entries coming up! then i’ll probably get lazy and stop blogging for another year. therefore, enjoy this mood while it lasts :)

004 books books books/happy birthday!

December 20th, 2005 by michelletam

first off…HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEN! you hit the big 2-oh! :D

and because i’m nice, you get a birthday song here…in italics!

happy birthday to you
happy birthday to you
happy birthday to benjamin ng shen zhen
*gasps*
happy birthday to yoooooou!

hehe. moving on!

fraser hill trip is well and truly over - and i enjoyed every bit of it too. maybe a more detailed post on that later.

anyways, i’ve been shopping like ke-ra-zy, and most of the things i seem to be buying are clothes and books! anyways, i’m more excited about the books than the clothes, so here’s the books i bought during the holidays (along with the discounts i got, and their original prices, where i bought them, and such! keep your ears eyes peeled, you might find a new hunting ground for your books!

okie dokie. let’s start!

i) the tale of genji - murasaki shikibu translated by rondall tyler

retail price : rm 112.32
i got it for : rm 112.32
i got it at : kinokuniya, klcc

i think it’s : a reason to celebrate. it’s a beautiful book, and i’ve been looking for a version that is well worth my money. and this one is! it’s the latest translation, is full of japanese illustrations, a deluxe edition by penguin and has nifty things like the maps of the imperial palaces, jap words for the clothes the imperials wore etc.

yes, it’s expensive, but i’ve been lusting after this book for so many years.

ii) the complete chronicles of narnia (yeap, all 7 books!) - c.s.lewis

retail price : rm 79.90
i got it for : rm 61.90
i got it at : carrefour, midvalley megamall

i think it’s : pretty good, finished the entire series in two days. however, i can’t help but feel it’s lotr for kids? i mean, the main lotr body is comprised of six books (though people commonly know it as a trilogy) and i took AGES to finish that.

iii) the imperial woman - pearl s.buck

retail price : rm 50.50
i got it for : rm 40.40
i got it at : popular bookstore, ikano power centre

i think it’s : a bloody miracle. why? my mom and i have been hunting for  looking for this book for SEVEN YEARS. i’m not kidding you. the last time we read it was in the dingy little plaza library, and we’ve looked for it ever since. when i saw it in popular, i just grabbed it, marched up to the counter and paid for it. i didn’t even bother to look at the price! luckily got 20% discount, heh :P

iv) memoirs of a geisha - arthur golden

retail price : rm 35.90
i got it for : rm 27
i got it at : popular bookstore, jusco

i think it’s : time people read this book. i owned it about four years ago, and half (and i do mean half) of my old book is missing due to a lot of lending out, so i bought a new one that has the oh so pretty zhang zi yi on the cover. whee! the story was a joy to reread.

v) hp and the half blood prince - j.k.rowling

retail price : rm 99.90
i got it for : rm 59.90
i got it at : popular bookstore, jusco

i think it’s : a good prelude to book seven, not much of a book on it’s own. anyways, i read the online one ages ago, but i had to complete my potter collection - plus it was bloody cheap. always pays to wait!

vi) the curious incident of the dog in the night time

cannot tell price all, because it was a gift for zachary. if you guys really want to know, go check your locak bookstores.

i wanted to buy more moleskines for myself (www.moleskine.co.uk) BUT I REALIZED THEY"RE FREAKING EXPENSIVE. so far, all the moleskines i have (four) are gifts from people, except one which i bought for myself.

i mean - rm 87 for a notebook?! god, i love moleskines, but i thought it’s only be rm 70! at least that would be bearable :( sigh. one day i’ll be filthy rich and stock my shelves with pretty moleskines. until then, must make my current ones laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast.

okie. and the books i describe next were bought from this gorgeous second hand bookstore in The Mall  (you know, that old place near the kl world trade center) and i love love love it!

the shop is called book chest, and all you chick lit/amy tan/john/grisham/(insert favourite author’s name here) can find your heart’s desire there. heck, they even had the brand new version of memoirs of a geisha!!! :( and it was cheaper than mine!!! :(

i saw stuff by sheila o’ flanagan, thomas harris, danielle steel, shakespeare, things like that. and most of them are in really good condition, and are also cheaper by at least 10 bucks!

ahem. anyways, mom and i went there to scour for old old books that mph/borders etc don’t stock anymore, and boy were we rewarded for our hour of looking through the shelves!

we bought :

the world of suzie wong - richard mason
dragon seed - pearl s.buck
sons - pearl s.buck (second in ‘the good earth trilogy’, the last one is ‘a house divided’)
wild swans - jung chang

guess how much the whole lot cost? rm 64.

THAT IS A STEAL.

DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO LOCATE THE FIRST THREE BOOKS I MENTIONED?

i don’t think they’re even in print anymore. but whew, am i happy we got them.

i remember spending about rm 500+ on books, so this is obviously not the whole lot. i can’t remember the rest, but i guess i read them already and they’re residing in my bookcase.

and that’s a long enough post for today, innit? take care people!

003 i give up

December 4th, 2005 by michelletam

- being a music elitist, that is.

seriously, one of the worst and most tiring arguments to ever get into is an argument over preference of music. it can sever friendships, break hearts and all those dismal things.

before i explore that part (about how i used to be somewhat elitist and probably will never kick the habit, and how being a music snobs hurts people), here’s a cheerful example of how, when one is properly proud of one’s brand of preferred music and therefore will bear enough knocks about it, things can work out!

(note : the following conversation has been embellished for the purpose of your entertainment - and mine, but you get the idea.)

form 1/some obscure point in the past.

lisa : oh my god backstreet boy’s new single is amazing! and nick is so cute in this latest video!

me : that dumb song that’s a poor lesson about the shape of their hearts and the one where nick’s  hair looks like his hairstylist hates him and his ancestors?

lisa : you’re mean.
me : wait, have you heard ‘yellow’ by coldplay? oh god, chris martin is so sexy there, so dapper… he makes walking along the beach look like art!
lisa : you mean the one where there’s something about skin and bones and dying and where he looks  like he’s completely drunk?
me:  you’re mean.

both : it’s not my fault your taste in music sucks.

form 5/some obscure point not too long ago.

lisa : oh my god backstreet boy’s new single is amazing! and nick is so cute in this latest video!

me : that dumb song that’s about them having an obsession with them trying to let exes go and
where they insist on wearing matching outfits? at least n-sync disappeared for good.

lisa : you’re mean.

me : wait, have you heard ’speed of sound’ by coldplay? oh god, chris martin is so sexy there, so awesome, he makes waving your hands around and dancing erratically in streams of multicoloured light look like art!

lisa : you mean the one where there’s something about birds flying at the speed of sound, which is stupid, because we’d be killed by zooming pigeons, and where he looks like he’s having a fit and a heart attack at the same time?

me:  you’re mean.

both : but that song’s quite nice.

so you see, music elitism (no matter which side you take) is somewhat pointless. after all these years, lisa and i have softened into grudging approval. i’ve agreed that nick is quite winsome when he isn’t falling in love with weird people paris hilton and bai ling, and she’s agreed that chris is not a pansy quite sexy when he’s not trying to dance.

anyways, yes - it’s no use, really, because to be a proper snob i’ll have to critique lots and lots of music that supposedly isn’t good enough, and i don’t deserve to do that, because i can’t play or compose or write any form of music.

heard about my 8 dead goldfish? i gave up writing songs to lament their death after the fifth one.not that the songs were much good anyway, they usually involved me being sad about feeding them too much and allowing the fungus infections to kill them. and they all died the same way - there’s only so many time you can elegantly phrase how goldie/ma cherie/donnie flipped over belly up after all. but if the 9th one dies, i’ll write a haiku. there’s much less room for error in 17 syllables.

i was going to be snide about simple plan here - but that’d defeat the whole purpose of this post. plus quite a few acquaintances, friends even, like that band for some godforsaken reason, so i digress.

so why am i kicking the habit, or trying to? see, there’s several degrees of snobs/elitism, and i’m definitely not in the higher ranks of them. and if one can’t be a proper snob, why bother? i may like radiohead and all of that, but i like other things as well. i can’t properly detest good charlotte’s anthemic ‘the anthem’ because i do like it, and i enjoyed simple plan’s ‘addicted to you’. so if you like parts of something, you can’t properly dislike it, right?

so goodbye elitism!

anyways, i’ve got to pack. toodles!

002 spm is finally over

December 3rd, 2005 by michelletam

spm is finally over, and i’m so glad.

well, technically, i felt the pangs of merdeka after the biology paper - which directly translates into me going home, turning on the computer and playing the sims for four hours straight, as well as yakking on the phone with my best friends jessie, ruby and lisa and sleeping late after rereading harry potter and the goblet of fire.

the real end of it for us science stream students was the est paper (english for science and technology) and even then, we were really relaxed because, uh, to be nice, est’s a joke. during the short breaks between papers, we’re usually huddled together in the walkways, frantically trying to cram more facts into our already overstuffed brains.

but during friday’s break, it was different. people didn’t pull out revision books from their bags, but digital cameras and handphones. jessie and i took quite a few pictures together, and i got to join some other cliques/groups as well. it was nice - there were camera flashes going off everywhere, and several funny incidents of people hijacking other people’s photoshoots.

it was such fun - and i’m already missing my friends tremendously.

how did five years of high school fly by so fast?!
